The field of International Relations emerged in the early twentieth century with the objective of understanding, analysing and explaining relations between states. Over the last few decades, this conventional wisdom has given way to a greater appreciation of other aspects of international politics such as forces of globalisation and fragmentation, the role of non-state actors, and issues such as human rights and climate change.
