The Department of Biotechnology was introduced in August, 2008 under the same roof of Medical Biochemistry Department, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences where the existing faculties are well trained and specialized in techniques related to the core subjects like, immunochemistry, molecular biology and recombinant DNA technology. It was one among those skill development programme under Sikkim Manipal University, Gangtok and now, under the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences, Gangtok. Presently there are13 existing laboratories and museums and new four advanced laboratories, like Animal Tissue Culture Lab, PCR Lab, Immunochemistry Lab and Molecular Biology and r-DNA technology Lab are under the process. The main aim of the programme is to give competent practical based training, that the candidate is able to undertake independent teaching and research activities after the completion of the course.
