As a multidisciplinary applied science, Biotechnology is an amalgam of Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Fermentation Technology, Bioprocess Engineering, Tissue Culture Technology, Molecular Biology and Recombination DNA Technology and Economics. This field of knowledge aims at transforming biological inputs into commercial outputs and new products as well. Bioinformatics has a key role to play in the cutting edge Research and Development areas such as functional genomics, proteomics, protein engineering, metabolic pathway engineering, pharmacogenomics, discoveries of new drugs and vaccines, molecular diagnostic kits, agro-biotechnology etc. This has attracted attention of several companies and entrepreneurs. As a result a large number of Bioinformatics based start-ups have been launched and the trend is likely to continue. The immense development in these two fields has necessitated the availability of large number of formally trained individuals in Biotechnology & Bioinformatics
