The BHMS course is of five and half year's duration (including one year compulsory internship) and was started in December, 1987. Students possessing Higher Secondary (10+2) or equivalent qualification with five subjects viz. English, Physics, Chemistry & Biology recognised by the West Bengal University of Health Sciences are eligible for admission. (qualification awarded by Open School and Open University are not eligible for admission as per the University) 83 seats are available every year among which 14 seats are allocated amongst the nominees of States/Union Territories, 05 students are reserved for students of BIMSTEC countries(Bangladesh,Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand)nominated by Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Ministry of External Affairs and 01 seat is reserved for foreign National under self financing scheme. 10 seats are to be filled up by candidates sponsored by Govt. of Sri Lanka through the Depts. of AYUSH, Govt. of India.If no candidates are sponsored by Govt. of Sri Lanka, these seats will remain vacant; no other candidate will be admitted against these seats.
