The profession of Automobiles, in addition to the Skills, also requires the knowledge of Research and Development, Artistic creativity in Design coupled with Leadership and Business acumen. It also requires a broad understanding of scientific principles, knowledge of materials and fuels. An Automobile Engineer is a connoisseur who practices art, science and technology. However, the colleges offering the Automobile programmes are very less in comparison with the other disciplines. The Professional Institutions to impart education are again too less in number to feed the growing hunger of Automotive Engineers who compete at the International Arena. To fill up this void and to safeguard the interests of the Automotive engineers, the Institution of Automobile Engineers India, promoted by the Automobile Society India has come to exist.

The automobiles sector is divided into four segments two-wheelers (mopeds, scooters, motorcycles, electric two-wheelers), passenger vehicles (passenger cars, utility vehicles, multi-purpose vehicles), commercial vehicles (light and medium-heavy vehicles), and three wheelers (passenger carriers and good carriers).

Since the delicensing of the sector in 1991 and the subsequent opening up of 100 percent FDI through automatic route, Indian automobile sector has come a long way. Today, almost every global auto major has set up facilities in the country.
