The department was started in the year 1986. Currently the department has a total intake of 120 students at UG level. The department is also running M.Tech full time and M.Tech Part Time (QIP) programs.Department is accrediated by NBA and permanently affiliated to VTU. The department has highly qualified,experienced and dedicated staff members, a well equipped library and state-of-the-art computing facilities.

The minimum qualification for seeking admission to the B.E. (8 semesters) is PUC-II of Karnataka Board or any other equivalent examination recognized by the Visvesvaraya Technological University(VTU), Belgaum, Karnataka with minimum aggregate marks of 45% in Mathematics, Physics and in one of the optional subjects namely Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology. 40% marks in case of SC/ST & OBC. Candidates having passed the qualifying examination from other Boards / Universities are required to secure eligibility certificate from the University (VTU) before being admitted.

Admission Process
Prospective Engineering students can seek admission to the Institute through the Common Entrance Test (CET) administered by the Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Karnataka. The CET is administered once a year, usually after the Pre-University Examinations of the Karnataka Pre-University Examination Board, Bangalore are over. The Test is notified in Newspapers sometime in January/February each year. The eligibility to take the CET and other criteria and procedures are published along with this notification and are subject to change every year. Students from other States in India are also required to take the CET for admissions to the Engineering Course in Karnataka.
