Vardhman Mahavir Medical College was established at Safdarjung Hospital in November 2001. Padma Shree Dr. Jagdish Prasad is the founder Principal of the college.

The Lady Hardinge Medical College for women was founded in 1914 to commemorate the visit of Her Majesty Queen Mary in 1911-12. Lady Hardinge the wife of the then viceroy was the first to take initiative for starting a medical college for women, as the lack of seperate medical college for women made it possible for Indian women to study medicine.

Among the temples of modern India which he designed, was a centre of excellence in the medical sciences. Nehrus dream was that such a centre would set the pace for medical education and research in Southeast Asia , and in this he had the wholehearted support of his Health Minister, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur.
